Virtual Performance Issues
Virtualization has the potential to reduce costs by saving money on physical footprint, power, hardware costs, and support personnel. But the savings can only be realized if the virtual guests are properly maintained. File and free space fragmentation are known performance killers on virtualized Windows guests because they cause slower disk reads and disk writes.
Excess I/O activity, caused by fragmentation, creates resource contention between virtual guests and elevates resource usage on the vSphere host which in turn creates resource bottlenecks and slows system performance. File system fragmentation can only be addressed by logically defragmenting the files. SAN and/or RAID disk storage do not alleviate these problems.
